This is a long forgotten memorial to the inventor of Radio - Marconi Gulielmo (1874-1937) at the 3200 block of 16th St, NW. Marconi also received the Nobel prize for physics in 1909.

Coming across this fine piece of 1930's stonework in the inner city was like bumping into a strange and romantic ruin in a forgotten backwater.

According to James M. Goode in "The Outdoor Sculpture of Washington, DC: A Comprehensive Historical Guide" (1974) at 424-425, the memorial - composed in granite and bronze - was begun in 1938 and completed in 1941. It was sculpted by Attilio Piccirilli.

This is the same monument as seen from the base.

Note: Purists would argue that Marconi should only be credited as a co-inventor of Radio with another early 20th century luminary - Nicola Tesla.
