More Art Deco. I call this picture (taken in July 1999) "Owl" - for the wise owl at the base of the marble steps leading into the John Adams Building of the Library of Congress (2nd & Pennsylvania, NE).
The overall effect of this scene under a summer sun is dreamy - dreamy, translucent and timeless; like something out of the golden age of science fiction. But it also evokes the monuments of the ancient cultures of the Nile Valley; - it somehow manages to be both ancient and futuristic.
The Adams building was completed in 1939 and is covered in georgia marble. The massive doors leading into the library are bronze and layered with allegorical figures from world history. They were designed by sculptor Lee Lawrie. They are not in use today; visitors enter through side doors.
