This is a pair of sidewalk scenes. For a committed pedestrian like myself, sidewalks are important - they set the scene or tone for each individual city block.
Sidewalks are also a sign of wealth: they are expensive to build and are virtually nonexistent in third world nations. For example, - people, donkeys, chickens, cars and trucks all share the road in much of Africa and Asia! Sidewalks occupy the middle ground between dusty ancient cities and pedestrian-hostile suburban sprawl.
I call this shot, taken in front of the Hotel Harrington in April 2000:
"Harrington/Sidewalk"

This is a shot of a section the 18th street sidewalk in Adams-Morgan taken sometime in the spring of 1999.
I call it "Mercato/Sidewalk" after the Ethiopian delicatessen at the base of the staircase in the foreground.
