Gnome/National CathedralNo cathedral - and certainly no great gothic cathedral - is complete without a cohort of gargoyles, grotesques and other sprites and elementals from the pagan depths of the christian mind.

My favorite gargoyle at the National Cathedral is this pan-like gnome (Sculptor: Edith Beppeto Parsons) . Somewhere in the inaccessible heights of one of the church towers is another of my favorites - a tiny carving of Darth Vader's fearsome helmeted head!

I call this photo, taken in June 1999:

"Gnome".
